Fly fishing is a great activity which provides an excellent opportunity to develop personal relationships with both clients and colleagues alike. We cater for everyone from the complete novice to the seasoned fisherman. Full individual or group tuition is available, with all equipment supplied.
Situated in ten acres of low lying meadow and woodland, Heathwaen’s trout fishery is ideal for the angler seeking peace and tranquillity. It consists of two spring-fed lakes (Eccleston and Blurton), which are stocked with a mixture of rainbow, brown, blue and gold trout. You are almost guaranteed a bite, as the lakes have a density of around 150 trout to the acre. The lakes are open to casual use or can be exclusively booked for corporate days or party bookings. We are open all year round with the exception of Christmas Day.
Although the lakes are man-made, attentive care has been taken to ensure the lakes look both natural and attractive. The surrounding area has been planted with indigenous trees and shrubs and both lakes have islands to help attract wildlife.
Eccleston Lake is about 2 ½ acres and was completed in 2003 it is now well established and abounded with marginal plants and aquatic fly life. This lake has four islands, two of which can be fished from and two which are ideal breading grounds for wildlife and aquatic life. The water depth ranges from 2ft to 12ft with many features including drop offs, deep swims and gravel bars. Trout sizes range from 1lb to 15lb.
Blurton Lake is about 3 ½ acres and was completed in 2005. Trout sizes range from 2lb to 20lb. The lake is beautifully clear enabling the keen angler to stalk the trout. This lake ranges from depths of 5ft to 12ft. It has two islands but only one can be fished from.
The ecology of the water meadows is extremely rich, and provides the right environment for the abundant fly hatches. This commences with the Caddis Fly, followed by the May Fly. From June onwards we experience prolific hatches of Dragon and Damsel Flies. Winged Olives provide excellent late evening sport. During August and September Sedges and Daddy long-legs prove to be a favourite and in October there are plenty of Buzzer larvae.
Among the facilities provided are toilets, washroom and a club house where anglers can chat over a warm drink on a cold day. Alternatively, lunch or dinner can be obtained at the local village just a stones throw down the road. Accommodation is also available in our stunning log cabins.
Dry fly fishing is good sport when conditions allow, during warm evenings when the flies are hatching. Successful flies include Gold Head Nymphs, Damsel Nymphs, May Fly, Hares Ear, Buzzers, Sedges, Montana Lures and Black Fly.
